Hotel Skeppsholmen Press Kit

In the heart of Stockholm, on the lush island of Skeppsholmen, lies Hotel Skeppsholmen – a hidden, tranquil gem at the centre of the city’s vibrant heart.

Housed in two historic buildings designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and built between 1699 and 1702, the hotel’s story begins with reclaimed brick from castle ruins and the construction of the Royal Palace — an early expression of sustainability that continues to guide the hotel’s philosophy today.

Originally intended as barracks for King Charles XII’s elite guard, Långa raden was never used for that purpose. Instead, the buildings went on to serve many purposes, from a plague workhouse to naval offices and later residential accommodation, before being designated a protected historic monument in 1935. Our hotel rooms are dedicated to some of the men and women who once called this place home.

In 2009, Claesson Koivisto Rune and Erséus Arkitekter carefully transformed the buildings into a modern hotel, preserving historic details and ensuring that all new additions were fully reversible.

Today, Hotel Skeppsholmen is a peaceful Swedish oasis with 78 rooms, a waterside restaurant, meeting spaces, and striking views of Stockholm’s inner-city skyline. Sustainability remains central — from thoughtful material choices to the on-site kitchen garden that inspires seasonal dishes.

Where history and modernity meet, the hotel brings together Swedish design, food, culture and conscious living. A proud holder of the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and a member of Design Hotels, the hotel offers a stay defined by quality, character and enduring respect for its remarkable past.

Restaurant and Kitchen Garden

Restaurant Långa Raden

At Restaurant Långa Raden, Swedish flavours meet a modern, coastal sensibility in a calm yet vibrant setting by the water. The menu showcases seasonal ingredients — many sourced from the hotel’s own kitchen garden — and presents timeless dishes prepared with genuine craftsmanship. The restaurant opens onto the surrounding lounge areas, where classic Swedish design, natural materials and a soft, understated elegance create a welcoming atmosphere from morning to evening.

Kitchen Garden

Hotel Skeppsholmen has its own kitchen garden, designed in close collaboration with Nobis Hospitality Group’s gardener and the head chef. Seasonal herbs, flowers and produce are harvested just a few steps from the restaurant, inspiring dishes rooted in simplicity, quality and Swedish culinary tradition.

Meeting and event venues

Skridskopaviljongen

Just a stone’s throw from the hotel, on the neighbouring island of Kastellholmen, stands our remarkable Skridskopaviljongen — a small castle-like pavilion built in 1882 by King Oscar II for the Royal Skating Club and the Royal Swedish Yacht Club.

In the late 19th century, the royal court and high society would gather here over hot chocolate whilst skating on the bay in winter. Today, this unique historic venue is available for all kinds of gatherings.

Inside, beautifully adorned salons with original décor and stucco detailing create an elegant atmosphere. The grand main hall opens onto a stone staircase terrace by the water, complemented by the side salon known as the Ladies’ Parlour — and a more contemporary attic-style space on the upper floor.

The Naval Officers’ Mess

In the hotel’s historic banquet hall, Sjöofficersmässen, naval officers have gathered for celebrations since the mid-1800s. The bright hall still features original décor and antique shutters, paired with contemporary design by Claesson Koivisto Rune. The space can be divided into a larger and smaller room using elegant sliding doors, allowing for flexible event set-ups — from receptions or registration areas to dinners and meetings. With excellent acoustics and bespoke lighting, Sjöofficersmässen offers a refined and adaptable setting for any occasion.

Departementet

The private dining room, Departementet, has attracted considerable attention for its unique interior designed by the award-winning architectural trio Claesson Koivisto Rune. At its heart is a seven-metre bespoke, handcrafted oak table, complemented by exclusive custom lighting. The beautiful views of the water, Djurgården and the hills of Söder create a calm and soothing atmosphere.

About Nobis Hospitality Group

Alessandro Catenacci is the driving force behind many of Stockholm’s top restaurants, nightclubs and hotels. His Italian name may reveal his Roman origins, but a distinctly Scandinavian sense of luxury is evident in everything Catenacci does. Above all, he hopes to offer guests places where they can feel as comfortable and humbly self-assured as he is. “I sometimes look at myself in the mirror and think, ‘Am I really good at anything, or was it just luck’?”

Back in 1987, Catenacci bought the Stockholm-based restaurant empire belonging to the great Scandinavian chef Tore Wretman – including Café Opera, Operakällaren, the Riche and Stallmästaregården. This shrewd acquisition became the springboard for what now comprises seven top-tier hotels, in addition to the restaurants and nightspots. Catenacci’s ease makes his success seem as though luck were indeed a factor, but it is actually the result of a long-term vision, hard work and an intuitive business sense.

His company, the Nobis Group, has grown steadily over the more than two decades that have passed since that shrewd deal was struck. In many ways, the conglomerate’s philosophy combines the best of Catenacci’s Italian heritage – a passionate approach to fine food and a keen eye for quality – with the epitome of Scandinavian understatement.
