Nobis Hotel Stockholm Press Kit

The 201-room hotel is situated in two historic, interconnected 19th-century buildings and occupies a prime location on Norrmalmstorg square in central Stockholm.

Outstanding personal service and unique experiences in gastronomy, accommodation and atmosphere are the key characteristics of this hotel. “Our hotel is extremely comfortable but without unnecessary excesses. It is elegant and timeless, a contemporary classic, never trendy. The quality of everything we offer our guests is superior, often something out of the ordinary. The same applies to our service, which is meticulous and highly professional,” says Alessandro Catenacci, owner of Nobis.

In creating Nobis Hotel, Alessandro Catenacci and the design firm Claesson Koivisto Rune have drawn on their personal experiences as global travellers and thought through every detail of the hotel and its services from a guest’s perspective. Nothing at Nobis Hotel is routine; there is always something extra.

Nobis Hotel holds the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, the official eco-certification of the Nordic countries. To be awarded this label, a hotel must meet numerous requirements – such as reducing its energy consumption and using renewable energy sources. Nobis Hotel takes its environmental responsibility seriously throughout the hotel: it mainly uses local products made from carefully selected natural materials, and consistently opts for the most environmentally sound solutions.

Architecture & Design

Claesson Koivisto Rune

Historic architecture blends with contemporary Scandinavian design

Nobis Hotel is housed in two connected stone buildings dating from the late 19th century. They are representative of the unique and magnificent ‘stone city’ (a term referring to the massive stone buildings that line its city blocks) that began to emerge in the Norrmalm and Östermalm districts in the second half of the 19th century, at the outset of Sweden’s industrial revolution. The interiors were designed by the world-renowned architecture and interior design trio Claesson Koivisto Rune.

“As we created this hotel in two historic buildings, we had the opportunity to shape a specific kind of atmosphere from the outset, which was one of our main ambitions with the design. The real challenge was achieving this effect whilst at the same time being modern, edgy, sharp and contemporary, without the standard features of most traditional luxury hotels – the gold, the velvet, the thick red carpets and all that. We’ve worked both with and against the buildings to achieve the effects we wanted here,” says Eero Koivisto.

Claesson Koivisto Rune drew their inspiration from Stockholm’s winter colours. Subdued and understated tones characterise the rooms and public spaces, creating an inviting and relaxing atmosphere. The interiors for the rooms and the rest of the hotel were carefully curated using pieces from various designers and manufacturers to evoke the feeling of being in a private home.

“From the outset, we’ve been inspired by the look of Stockholm – not in summer, when the light is bright and magical, but in winter, when the light is softer and less contrasty. The overall impression should be calm and relaxing, free from strong, dominant contrasts and any gimmicks. Instead, there are plenty of clever and beautiful details and surprises to discover over time,” says Ola Rune.

Rooms and Suites

The hotel has a total of 201 rooms spread across six floors. Small Single rooms have an average size of 15 sqm, Standard Queen and Standard King rooms range from 17 to 22 sqm, Superior rooms have an average size of 23–26 sqm, Deluxe rooms with an average size of 25–33 square metres, One-room suites with an average size of 32–35 square metres, three stylish Corner Suites with an average size of 47 square metres, and our Panorama Suite measures 53 square metres. All rooms offer either a courtyard, city or sea view. The highlight is the grand Nobis Suite, measuring 98 square metres; the suite offers the option of two connecting rooms, bringing the total size to 134 sqm.

The rooms and suites are primarily designed using natural materials that become more beautiful with age, such as wool, wood, stone, leather and glass. High ceilings in all rooms create a sense of space and airiness. Subdued colours such as light grey, brown, beige and white create a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere. “The rooms are luxurious, but in an honest, no-nonsense way, devoid of standard luxury gimmicks or gold and velvet. There is no cheating, no tricks. The sense of luxury stems from optimal comfort and functionality, and a cool, sophisticated ambience, without excess,” says architect and designer Ola Rune. The bathrooms are fitted with white Carrara marble throughout. Nobis Hotel has selected toiletries from the Swedish fragrance house Byredo.

The suites have a different look and feel to the rooms, featuring a blend of old and new. Historic details are combined with contemporary furniture, which provides a contrast to the traditional surroundings. “The challenge has been to create suites that will suit both professional and romantic purposes – for business meetings and lovers’ weekends alike. I think we’ve succeeded in this. The master suite in particular will be something quite special – a true modern boudoir,” says Ola Rune.

Light plays an important role in Sweden and is an integral part of the atmosphere in the rooms and suites. Each room features sophisticated lighting with up to five light sources, allowing guests to adjust the lighting to suit their mood. The suites even have up to ten different lights. All lamps have a distinct character and are created by renowned designers such as David Chipperfield and Ilse Crawford. All rooms and suites come with their own TV offering a wide range of channels (HD), which also functions as an entertainment centre, a computer screen, an iPod dock and has many other features. Safes are fitted with power sockets where guests can recharge their laptops whilst storing them.

Restaurants and bars

Restaurant NOI

NOI presents an inspiring menu that draws on gastronomic influences from across Europe. With a strong emphasis on seasonality, freshness and high-quality ingredients, the kitchen delivers contemporary dishes rooted in timeless flavours — showcasing the restaurant’s signature approach to modern European dining.

Further enriching the experience, NOI places a distinct focus on wine, offering a carefully curated list supported by an extensive wine cellar featuring unique and rare bottles. This dedication to thoughtful pairings and exceptional producers elevates every visit.

Set amidst an oasis of Scandinavian design, the restaurant combines individuality with a uniquely Swedish brand of luxury. Aesthetically, this manifests itself as a dimly lit subterranean space lined with circular booths upholstered in olive green leather, mosaic parquet flooring and walnut-panelled walls. Designed by the pre-eminent Swedish architectural firm Wingårdhs, every aspect of NOI is shaped by natural materials, including leather from Tärnsjö and striking black marble carved into the restaurant’s standout bar.

Restaurant Bino

Bino is a lively and inviting spot where the energy of Southern Europe meets the elegance of Stockholm. At its heart stands a classic zinc bar, setting the tone for an informal yet refined atmosphere. With an open kitchen, guests can smell, taste and observe the craftsmanship behind each dish, evoking the vibrant spirit of Italian and Spanish neighbourhood bars.

During the spring and summer months, Bino extends out onto the square.

The Gold Bar

The Gold Bar is the perfect place either to start the evening with some light snacks or to enjoy a digestif. Walls covered in golden mirrors and a multitude of reflective lights create a kaleidoscopic atmosphere in the Gold Bar.

The Lounge

The Lounge, often referred to as ‘Stockholm’s living room’, is situated next to the Gold Bar and comprises four separate living rooms, each furnished in a different style. With its 28-metre-high ceiling and multicoloured surface, the lounge evokes the feeling of being in a cathedral, complete with modern ceiling frescoes.

The 800 square metres of public facilities, including the NOI restaurant, Bino, the Gold Bar and the Lounge, provide an exciting and inviting setting for visitors and locals alike.

Rejuvenation and relaxation at the fitness centre

The fitness centre at Nobis Hotel is situated on the first floor. It features a white marble sauna area where guests can relax in one dry sauna and one steam sauna. The fully equipped gym benefits from natural light and views of the atrium. The gym’s design differs from the rest of the hotel, giving guests the impression of entering a secluded, soothing retreat. The walls are painted in light colours, with turquoise curtains offering views of one of the hotel’s two courtyards. Facials and massages are available to guests staying at the hotel and are initially provided in the guest rooms.

A gateway to the city – a central location in the Swedish capital

Nobis Hotel is situated on Norrmalmstorg Square, the most attractive square in central Stockholm, at the heart of the city’s business, shopping and entertainment district. Norrmalmstorg Square itself is the centre of the fashion district, with designer boutiques and department stores within walking distance. The flagship stores of the Swedish brands Acne and Marimekko are situated right within the hotel building. Stockholm’s major attractions, such as the Royal Palace and the National Museum, are just a short walk away.

Guests staying at Nobis Hotel are the first to know what’s happening in Stockholm. All staff have in-depth knowledge of current events and activities in the city and can recommend the best restaurants, nightclubs, art galleries and museums to guests.

Those longing for some fresh air and unspoilt nature are definitely in the right city. One third of Stockholm consists of water and another third of green spaces. It’s the perfect place for both relaxation and adventure.

About Nobis Hospitality Group

Alessandro Catenacci is the driving force behind many of Stockholm’s top restaurants, nightclubs and hotels. His Italian name may reveal his Roman origins, but a distinctly Scandinavian sense of luxury is evident in everything Catenacci does. Above all, he hopes to offer guests places where they can feel as comfortable and humbly self-assured as he is. “I sometimes look at myself in the mirror and think, ‘Am I really good at anything, or was it just luck’?”

Back in 1987, Catenacci bought the Stockholm-based restaurant empire belonging to the great Scandinavian chef Tore Wretman – including Café Opera, Operakällaren, the Riche and Stallmästaregården. This shrewd acquisition became the springboard for what now comprises seven top-tier hotels, in addition to the restaurants and nightspots. Catenacci’s ease makes his success appear as though luck were indeed a factor, but it is in fact the result of a long-term vision, hard work and an intuitive business sense.

His company, the Nobis Group, has grown steadily over the more than two decades that have passed since that shrewd deal was struck. In many ways, the conglomerate’s philosophy combines the best of Catenacci’s Italian heritage – a passionate approach to fine food and a keen eye for quality – with the epitome of Scandinavian understatement.
